Description
Visitors love to listen to the sounds of their voices reverberate from the blue granite walls inside Stumphouse Tunnel, an unfinished railroad tunnel located in Sumter National Forest in Oconee County, South Carolina. Begun in 1853 by the Blue Ridge Rail Road as part of a line to link Anderson SC and Knoxville TN, construction was abandoned in 1859. Workers used hand drills, hammers and chisels and black powder to cut through the blue granite which now lines the walls of the tunnel. Open to the public, the 1,600-foot-long tunnel is part of the park, located near Walhalla SC, which also boasts picturesque Issaqueena Falls, a 100-foot-high cascade waterfalls.
