The Best Don't Always Win

October 3rd, 2019

I was surprised that author Joy C. Brown chose my photograph "The Long and Winding Road" for the front cover of her inspirational book "Finding Joy: 70 Life Lessons Along the Way," since I had tried to convince her otherwise. The photo was slightly soft (photographer's jargon for out of focus) since I had shot it on the spur of the moment in the rain through the windshield of my truck while the truck was moving forward (no, I wasn't the one who was driving.) To make matters worse, the shutter speed which the hand-held camera chose was too slow to allow any movement without blurring the image. Besides, the photo was horizontal, and everyone knows that book covers are vertical. I had other photos taken on bright, sunny days at the same location which were much more suitable. But Joy would accept none of my excuses and dismissed all my more suitable photos. She was captivated by the muted colors and dreamy quality of this image. It just goes to show that some of your less than perfect work can be your most liked. Others may see things in it that you haven't noticed or considered.
