Called the “Prettiest Depot in the South” during its heyday, the Southern Railway Passenger Depot in Gaffney SC, seen here in an old photograph, was constructed in 1906 at a cost of $10,000. Located between Robinson and Frederick Streets, it was built by J.A. Jones, a Charlotte NC contractor. The depot, made of pressed brick and roofed with red tiling, had two waiting rooms, an office and baggage room. The exterior was adorned with ornate support structures and rustic iron pieces. The interior was wainscoted with pine polished with a hard oil finish and outfitted with “grand” furnishings. Following decades of service, the building was demolished after being heavily damaged by fire in 1965.
