Description
Village blacksmith Albert Davidson fashions a "buzzard's wing" farm implement under the watchful eyes of his young grandson Ernest Littlejohn in his shop in Cherokee County, South Carolina. Blacksmiths were and still are important artisans in their local communities.
This photograph was shot with a hand-held camera in available light on Kodak Tri-X Pan 35mm black-and-white film. I used a 1/15 sec. shutter speed to blur the motion of the hammer. The image earned top awards in feature photo competitions sponsored by the South Carolina Press Association and National Newspaper Association. It was picked up by United Press International and circulated to subscriber newspapers.
