Description
The Apollo 14 spacecraft command module Kitty Hawk bears the heat effects of re-entry on its return from the moon on February 9, 1971. The Apollo 14 mission, with a crew including Alan Shepard Jr., Stuart A. Roosa, and Edgar D. Mitchell, was launched from Kennedy Space Center, Florida and was the third mission to achieve lunar landing. The lunar excursion module Antares landed in the Fra Mauro highlands. Kitty Hawk is on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center and Museum. The first successful manned landing on the moon was accomplished by Apollo 11 in July 1969. It was followed by Apollo 12. The next mission, Apollo 13, was aborted en-route due to system failures but returned safely to earth.
